Project Brief
Tucked behind an elegant period home in central Leamington Spa, this walled garden had long ceased to offer anything more than a passage from one door to the next. Following a substantial renovation of the property, the outdoor space had been left compacted and bare — no structure, no flow, no comfort. The clients were clear: they wanted a garden that respected the historical charm of the home while offering a private, liveable, and quietly luxurious space to entertain and unwind.
The vision called for balance. Something clean and calm. A space that would feel considered but never over-designed — where seasonal planting, material honesty, and architectural alignment would all quietly elevate daily living.
Design Response
Working with a narrow, asymmetric plot and a sharp level change, we avoided symmetry in favour of flow. Instead of dividing the garden into rigid quadrants, we offset the limestone path to follow the old brick wall, drawing the eye naturally to the new Crittall-style kitchen doors. This decision offered formality — but with feeling.
Pale limestone was selected to bounce light deep into the interior spaces, enhancing the visual connection between house and garden. Reclaimed bricks were used to build generous retaining walls that now serve double duty as informal seating — a nod to craft and longevity.
The planting scheme was intentionally restrained yet layered: four Amelanchier trees anchor the lawn’s corners, while textured borders unfold with soft perennials, seasonal bulbs, and structural evergreens. Existing mature trees — a magnificent oak and a prized magnolia — were preserved and protected throughout construction, grounding the new garden with a sense of permanence and maturity.
This is a garden designed to breathe — understated, intelligent, and fully in tune with the home it embraces.
Client Testimonial
“Working with Tom and his team was an absolute pleasure. From our very first meeting, Tom approached the project with clarity, warmth, and professionalism. His design process helped us visualise the space in a way we hadn’t considered before — combining our aspirations with thoughtful suggestions that ultimately made the garden so much better.
During the build, everything ran smoothly. The team was efficient, respectful, and detail-focused. Every decision — from layout to planting — felt purposeful and well-executed. Tom sourced beautiful plants and premium materials, but always with our budget in mind. We particularly appreciated the transparency and structure throughout — it meant we always felt in control.
The result is a garden that brings us daily joy. It’s elegant, peaceful, and works perfectly with how we live. We’d wholeheartedly recommend Tom to anyone looking to transform their outdoor space.”
