Project Brief

This 1930s home had been thoughtfully renovated inside, but its garden remained wild, disjointed, and underused. The goal was to extend the feel and function of the house into the landscape — not just as an outdoor room, but as a calming, elemental environment that encouraged time outside.

The brief was clear: create a space that balanced clean structure with natural softness — a place for slow mornings, evening gatherings, and day-to-day ease. Privacy, flow, and seasonal interest were all priorities, but above all, the garden needed to feel calm and considered.

Design Response

We began by stripping the garden back to its bones, reshaping levels and reinforcing structure without overcomplicating the layout. A restrained palette of natural materials — large-format porcelain, coursed sandstone, black larch fencing — grounds the design in soft contrast and clarity.

A feature wall with integrated lighting and a built-in fireplace gives architectural rhythm to the dining terrace, while a bespoke garden studio at the rear provides a peaceful workspace nestled in greenery.

The planting is simple, textural, and deliberate — balancing evergreen structure with naturalistic flourishes. Every zone is positioned in response to the light throughout the day, creating spaces that feel natural to use and easy to inhabit. Integrated lighting and irrigation systems ensure the garden is practical as well as beautiful.

Testimonial

“This garden has become more than just an outdoor space — it’s a genuine extension of how we live. From the moment you step outside, there’s a shift. It slows you down. The layout is effortless, the materials feel grounded, and the planting lifts the entire space. It’s practical enough for everyday life — from work to play — but also gives us moments of stillness we didn’t realise we needed. Whether it’s summer dinners, quiet coffees, or stepping out between meetings, this space now feels essential. It’s brought ease, beauty, and balance to our home.”

Tasked with rejuvenating a lifeless courtyard space, our challenge was to introduce vibrancy and natural allure into a compact urban garden.
