About

TOM WOLSTENHOLME

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECT

I founded my studio in Leamington Spa in 2012, building on a lifelong fascination with design — and how people interact with space, light, and the natural world. My route into garden design hasn’t been conventional, but it’s one that’s grounded me in a deep respect for craft, clarity, and the quiet impact of our surroundings.

Before I designed gardens, I worked as an artist specialising in design and technical illustration. That experience taught me to design with purpose — to respond to a brief, solve problems with care, and ensure each element felt right both visually and practically. It gave me a strong foundation in purposeful composition, where clarity, proportion, and restraint were key — principles that continue to shape every garden I create. I don’t see gardens as layouts, but as living, breathing spaces — shaped by movement, atmosphere, and the changing light of the seasons.

In my early twenties, I stepped away from my career to travel and reflect on where it was all heading. That journey led me to a forest monastery, where I lived as a Buddhist monk for two years.

That time gave me a new way of seeing. It made me aware of how our environment affects how we feel — how peace, clarity, and connection often emerge from spaces that honour nature, rhythm, and stillness. That understanding continues to guide my work in subtle but meaningful ways.

After leaving monastic life, I trained in construction, garden design, and horticulture — combining hands-on expertise with a broader perspective. I now bring those elements together to create gardens that are grounded, purposeful, and built to last — spaces that feel as good as they look.

To me, a garden is never just a garden. It’s a space to breathe, to reflect, and to reconnect with what matters. It should support life, evolve with time, and feel deeply grounded in place.

This is the thinking that underpins every garden we design — and it’s the reason many of our clients come to us, and stay with us.

At Tom Wolstenholme Garden Design, we create outdoor spaces for people who value thoughtful design, lasting quality, and a calm sense of place. Much of our work explores the relationship between house and garden — creating seamless transitions that extend the spirit of a home outward into the landscape.

I remain personally involved in every project, from the first conversation to the final detail. We take pride in listening well, designing with care, and making the process enjoyable from start to finish.

We don’t overcomplicate. We design spaces that feel right — and stand the test of time.
